Maxwell ran a 9.9 100 yards in the afternoon qualifying, breaking the record of 10.0 established by Jacksonville's Dave Dunaway in 1963. Maxwell also set records in the 220 of 21.4 (old record 21.5 by Dunaway, 1963) and 440 of 48.3 (old record 50.0 by Maxwell 1963).

In the 100 final, Myers Park's George Soule won in 9.9, equaling Maxwell's 100 record, with Maxwell finishing third.

Garinger's Steve Laney tied the 120-yard High Hurdle record of 14.8 set in 1962 by Reid Warren of RJ Reynolds.

Raleigh Broughton set a new record in the 4x220 with a 1:31.1, beating the record of 1:32.0 set the previous year by Myers Park.

New Bern junior Harold Lilly set a new vault record of 13-0. The old record was 12-4 1/4 by Heath Whittle of North Mecklenburg in 1959.

Mike Richey of Myers Park broke the shot put record with a heave of 55-9 1/4. The old record was 53-8 7/8 by Rod Stewart of Burlington in 1962.

Myers Park's Flake Campbell set a new discus record of 163-3, bettering his old record of 157-7 set in 1963.

Note: Asheville HS was known as Lee H. Edwards High School from 1935-1969.
